Adjectives are the words that describe nouns or pronouns. They are often referred to as describing words.

e.g., He is a lazy man.

Adjectives usually appear before the noun and tell us more about that noun. But in some cases, they appear after the verbs if the verbs is, are, am, were, was are present in the sentence.

For example,

His paintings are amazing.

 

Types of adjectives:

Ø  Adjective of quality: The adjectives that describes the quality or kind of a person, a place, an animal or a thing.

For example,

Truthful boy

Tall building

Honest man

Bright colours

 

Ø  Indefinite adjectives: These are the adjectives that are used to describe the indefinite or unspecified quantity of a noun. The commonly used indefinite adjectives are any, many, more, several, few and some.

For example,

                Many people

                Several dishes

                Some flour

 

Ø  Numbers adjective: This is an adjective that describes the number or amount of a noun.

For example,

                First child

                Ten months

                Twenty books

 

Ø  Possessive adjective: An adjective that tells us the possession or to whom the thing/s belongs to.

For example,

                Her bangle

                Our house

                My brother

 

Ø  Demonstrative adjectives: They are the adjectives that help in pointing out specific people, place, animals or things.

For example,

                That building

                Those workers

                This dog

 

Ø  Interrogative adjectives: Adjectives that modify nouns by asking questions. The most common are whose, which and what.

For example,

                Whose book is that?

                Which company do you work for?

                What time is it?

 

Ø  Coordinate adjectives: Sometimes we use more than one adjective to describe a noun. These are called coordinate adjectives. These adjectives are separated by a comma or the word and.

For example,

                Everybody loves a kind and friendly man.

                It was a bright, sunny day.

I.                    Identify the adjectives in the following sentences.

1.       Once there lived a proud peacock. He had a very beautiful tail. The tail feathers were very colourful. There was also a crane in that forest. One day, the peacock told the crane that his feathers are dull and colourless. So the crane replied “that’s true, but I can fly high and see the beautiful earth hiding behind the white clouds”.
