One of the biggest environmental issues today is pollution. Our planet is under a lot of pressure as a result of rapid industrialization and population growth. Global warming and the extinction of numerous species of flora and fauna are the consequences of pollution.
India’s air quality has significantly declined as a consequence of unchecked urbanisation and industrialization. industrial smoke and emissions from vehicles are two major sources of air pollution. Tons of toxic substance are released into the air, water, and soil by factories. Fears concerning dust and smog are increasing. New Delhi is one of the top ten most polluted towns in the world, according to the World Health Organization. According to the surveys, the incidence of respiratory diseases is approximately twelve times greater in the capital than it is nationwide.
This year(2023), India surpassed China to become the most populated country in the world. Dense population also puts more strain on the environment, which has negative effects. We are already struggling under the weight of pollution, deforestation, soil exhaustion, and scarcity of water.
Increasingly high amount of pollution in the world has led to depletion in the ozone layer resulting in global warming. The primary pollutant responsible for the earth’s increasing temperature is carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. Other gases include methane and chlorofluorocarbons.
Excessive refrigeration, fuel combustion, and industrial emissions are a few of the main contributors to the production of these gases. The Taj Mahal in Agra was suffering from the effects of air pollution, which caused the white marble to develop a sickly yellow colour. All the factories in the region were closed as a result of a judicial decision. The World Health Organization’s suggested level of air pollution is now exceeded in many of our cities.
Our water resources are largely contaminated. Chemicals released from factories, and untreated sewage are dumped into rivers in densely populated cities. All of the dirt and trash are carried into rivers by the rainwater. For drinking, bathing, and washing, river water that hasn’t been treated is used. Children who drink contaminated water develop diarrhea and pass away. The presence of fecal bacteria in drinking water is one of the factors contributing to cholera epidemics.
Pesticides have contaminated the soil and crops due to widespread use. These pesticides have contaminated vegetables and grains. These contaminants have caused an increase in health issues. Cancer cases are increasing. Crop production has decreased as soil salinity has increased. Heavy metal toxins present in soils due to industrial waste products seep into groundwater causing contamination making it unfit for agricultural use. As a result , crop production decreases significantly with long term implications on global food security.
Another issue in cities is noise pollution. A lot of commotion is made when horns are honked. Loud speakers used for political, religious, and commercial reasons also disrupt people’s peace, stressing and tensing people out. Constant exposure to loud noises can lead to increased stress levels for both humans and animals alike due to their inability to escape from these sounds. This can cause physical symptoms such as headaches or difficulty sleeping which could eventually lead to mental health issues.
Some of the solutions to reduce the impact of pollution :
– Renewable Energy Sources: Replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources like solar power, wind turbines etc. helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions thus reducing air pollution drastically.
– Waste Management Systems: Proper management systems need to be implemented so that hazardous materials do not end up polluting landfills or waterways where they could potentially contaminate nearby areas too.
– Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Adopting sustainable farming practices ensures efficient use of resources while minimizing potential harm done through chemical fertilizers & pesticides used during cultivation processes thereby preventing soil degradation & preserving biodiversity at large scale.
Conclusion: It is clear that pollution causes immense damage if left unchecked. But there are ways we can mitigate its impact by implementing effective strategies such as using renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels; proper waste management systems; adopting sustainable agriculture practices etc. Taking action now would ensure healthier future generations won’t have suffer from ill-effects associated with environmental degradation caused by man made pollutants.
