On August 15, India celebrates its independence. India has a national holiday in remembrance of the day, August 15, 1947, when the country gained independence from the British. Jawaharlal Nehru said in his well-known speech, “Tryst with Destiny,” that at the stroke of midnight, when the rest of the world is asleep, India awakes to life and independence.

All Indians were happy to be free of oppression after years of harsh rule and brutal regulations put on her colony by the British. The martyrs’ and freedom fighters’ sacrifices were not in vain. Our country has advanced so far that we are now a major player in a number of sectors, including industry, education, and healthcare. Numerous notable scientists, engineers, doctors, economists, and writers have come from our country. A powerful and capable defence force patrols our borders and oceans. One of the best in the world is our rail system. We have launched satellites and travelled to space. India has indeed advanced so much.

The flag-hoisting ceremony is the main event of Independence Day. The National Flag is flown everywhere in the nation, including in government buildings, schools, panchayat offices, and even housing colonies. People stand at respect to honour the National Flag, which is a symbol of our sovereignty, and it is a very serious occasion when the flag is unfurled. The National Anthem is proudly recited after this.

The primary event occurs in New Delhi. On the ramparts of the Red Fort, the Prime Minister raises the National Flag before making a speech that is aired and broadcasted across the country. The address discusses the accomplishments of his administration over the previous year, brings up significant points, and urges the citizens to work together to bring greater honour to their nation. The Prime Minister also honours the men and women who participated in the struggle for freedom.

On Independence Day, India Gate is illuminated in a very distinctive way. Eveningtime views of it are beautiful. It symbolises the Amar Jawan Jyoti, or Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, of the Indian Army. It is appropriate that on this day we honour the heroic fighters who gave their lives in service to our nation.

Even though educational institutions don’t hold any academic activities, employees and students nonetheless show up for the institution’s flag-raising ceremony. Distribution of sweets and cultural performances that capture the spirit of India follow this. In order to raise the national flag and sing the national anthem, employees meet on the premises of the offices early in the morning. Community events are organized by different organizations.

Doordarshan broadcasts the Prime Minister’s speech and shows historical documentaries in keeping with the mood of the day. Both radio and television play patriotic music, and numerous stations air movies with nationalistic themes.
Independence Day is celebrated with great pride by Indians. Homes, shops, vehicles and buildings proudly display tricolour to celebrate our freedom and pay tribute to those who underwent tremendous challenges to end colonialism.

Independence Day is an occasion for Indians to reflect on their history, celebrate their freedom, and renew their commitment to building a strong, democratic, and prosperous nation.
