Not everything happens the way you want it to be. Some may turn out to be better than anticipated and others end up worse. To be able to keep moving, you need to look at the brighter side of life.

Be a half glass full person

“Is the glass half empty or half full?” is a phrase commonly used to demonstrate that a situation may be seen in different ways depending on one’s point of view. A glass halfway filled with water is perceived as half full by optimists whereas pessimist sees the glass half empty.

An optimistic person is the one who is confident and hopeful about the future whereas pessimist is the one who expects the worst possible scenario in every circumstances.

What is positive thinking?

Life is neither a bed of roses nor a bed of thorns. It is a combination of both. Roses have thorns. Positive thinking is about maintaining optimistic mindset even when things are out of control.

Looking from a positive perspective doesn’t mean that you dismiss reality. Positive thinking means solution-oriented thinking. No matter how bad the situation is, accept it, try to focus on what you can learn from it and how it is going to affect your further decisions.

There is an old story that at the end of the nineteenth century, a shoe company that sends two of its salesmen to the east and west coasts of Africa. One of them reported: “Nobody wears shoes here in Africa. There is no market for us”. While the other salesman reported, “Nobody wears shoes here. There is a huge market for our products.”

How to think positive?

  • Know that failure is not the end: One failure in a long path to success and most of you will lose hope. Consider it as a new beginning. Every time you fail you learn something new.

In response to a question by a news reporter about his missteps, Thomas Edison, prolific inventor and businessman replied, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10000 ways that won’t work.”

  • Pick your people: Surround yourself with optimistic people. Positive people give you positive vibes. Accompanying such people promote self-love.
  • Accept your flaws: No one is perfect. When you start embracing your flaws, you stop worrying what people think of you.
  • Let things go: Leave behind your yesterdays which you have no control over. Focus on what is going on in the present and how to brighten your future.
  • Practice positive self-talk: Believe in your actions and abilities. Don’t let your inner critic fool you by forcing you to second guess every moves you make.
  • Try to be a witty person: Humor is the best way to relieve yourself from negativity. Respond questions or negative statements in a humorous way.
